Older adult suffering from arthritis pain

Arthritis

More than half of adults age 65 and older have arthritis. They are two-and-a-half times more likely to have multiple falls and to suffer a fall injury, than those without arthritis.

Arthritis and Falls

  • Arthritis can cause damage to your knees and hips which can interfere with balance and mobility. This can make you more likely to fall.
  • There is no cure for arthritis, but it can be treated and managed. The first step is to talk to your doctor. It's important to get an accurate diagnosis as soon as possible so you can start treatment. Your doctor can also recommend activities that may reduce your symptoms, as well as your risk of falls.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight and staying active is especially important for those with arthritis. Low impact physical activity, such as Tai Chi, can help reduce risks and symptoms without putting too much stress on your joints. Tai Chi is also effective in reducing falls.
Steps You Can Take
  • Join a physical activity program such as Tai Chi for Arthritis.
  • Stay as physically active as your health allows. Some physical activity is better than none.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider about:
    • Avoiding medications for pain that may lead to a fall.
    • Recommendations to reduce your arthritis risk or best ways to manage your symptoms.
