
Module 7: Chronic Conditions
Chronic conditions are those that last one or more years, require ongoing medical oversight, and/or limit your daily activities. Chronic and other age-related conditions are strongly associated with higher risk of falling. Read on for some of the most common conditions associated with falls including signs to look out for and ways that you can reduce your risk.
Chronic Conditions and Falls
- Many chronic conditions are related to a higher risk of falls or fall injuries. They include diabetes, osteoporosis, and depression.
- Some of these conditions can occur without any symptoms but have side effects that increase your risk of falling.
- Medication for many of these conditions have side effects that can also increase fall risk.
- Smoking, poor nutrition, a lack of physical activity, and unhealthy alcohol use can cause chronic conditions.
- Know your risk of these conditions and be aware of their symptoms as they may affect your fall risk.
- There are many additional chronic conditions not included here that may increase your fall risk. Discuss any chronic conditions and the medications that you take for those conditions with your doctor to see if they may increase your fall risk.
Steps You Can Take
- Stay active, eat well, stop smoking, and limit alcohol use to reduce your risks.
- Become familiar with common chronic conditions and their signs by reviewing the modules in this planner.
- Ask your healthcare provider how your chronic condition(s) may put you at risk for a fall and how to reduce this risk.
- Take the Falls Free CheckUp and get a report. If you are at high risk for falls, make an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your risk.
