Module 6: Feet and Footwear
Wearing the right shoes can reduce your risk of falling. Supportive footwear can prevent injuries to your toes and feet and lessen your fall risk. This module describes common footwear mistakes. It also identifies the type of healthcare provider who can help you to treat problems that contribute to foot pain. The following are some things to consider:
Feet, Footwear, and Falls
- Stable Footwear. Going barefoot, wearing socks without shoes, wearing flip-flops, or wearing open-back or open-toed slippers can increase your risk of falling. Athletic or canvas shoes are safest because they protect your feet. Wearing shoes that fit well can also decrease your risk of falling.
- Foot and Leg Health. Podiatrists are doctors who specialize in treating conditions related to the foot, ankle, and lower leg. They can check your feet, your footwear, and work with you to resolve foot pain. They can also recommend strengthening exercises for your feet and/or ankles, prescribe foot or ankle supports, and help you pick shoes to maintain balance. Ask your healthcare provider for a referral to a podiatrist if you have foot pain or footwear problems that may be increasing your fall risk.
- Diabetes. You are at higher risk of foot problems if you have diabetes. Ask your healthcare provider for a referral to a podiatrist to help you keep your feet healthy and strong.
Steps You Can Take
- Avoid going barefoot or wearing only socks or slippers. Consider wearing more stable athletic shoes or sneakers even when you're in the house.
- Review the footwear guide for tips on picking the correct shoes for you.
- Make an appointment with your healthcare provider if you have foot pain or diabetes and ask if you need a referral to a podiatrist.
